One of South Africa’s oldest hotels, The Oyster Box located in Umhlanga, 20 minutes north of Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, is an institution. Being spoken about as ‘the rebirth of a legend’, this Grande Dame of 1947 has recently re-opened after a two year extensive upgrade. Our travel team where in the area after the Indaba and made a point of having lunch at the iconic land mark.
Says Mandi, “We knew that it was going to be lovely, located right on the beachfront, but we did not know if they were going to be able to retain and preserve the history, charm and respect of the past. We were hugely impressed that all of this was achieved and more…the original “Drama Queen” spiral staircase in the lobby, the floor tiles and of course the views which could not be replaced ! The hotel offers various dining options including high tea, fine dining and a curry buffet of 15 options (Durban being the home of Indian cuisine in the country, this is the place for that!).
The rooms are really beautiful and various combinations, suites and views are offered. We were suitably impressed by the family room which had elegant bunk beds in the childrens room. We didn’t make it in time for the high tea (which apparently gives the Vineyard a run for its money!) but we decided to stay for a bite to eat at The Oyster Bar restaurant which over looks the swimming pool and Indian Ocean. The Asian inspired decor really impressed us with the beautiful antique-like Asian fans that move gently above the bar – really something worth seeing for youself!”
A landmark in Durban not to be missed on your next visit!
